Frances Bean Cobain is the new face of Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2017 Campaign and we love her effortless grunge look.
The only child of Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain, Frances Bean Cobain, is joining the team of celeb kids in the fashion world. Frances Bean Cobain is the new face of Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2017 advertising campaign.
It is now clear that Marc Jacobs is really loving the Cobain family. Frances Bean Cobain is arriving in the fashion world just a few months after her mother, Courtney Love, starred in a campaign for Marc Jacobs. Courtney Love was the face of Marc Jacobs for the Fall 2016 collection. No surprise, Marc Jacobs calls Courtney the Goddess of Grunge. Marc also posted Kurt Cobain’s photo on Instagram with a sign that reads: “Men do not protect women anymore”. The photo was shared on the day of the Women’s March.
Marc Jacobs announced the collaboration with Frances Bean Cobain in an Instagram post, where he explained why he chose her for the new face of the brand.
“I first met Frances Bean when she was 2 years old at a dinner with her mom (Courtney) and Anna Sui in 1994 at Bar Six in NYC. I have always wanted to work with Frances. Her beauty, uniqueness, and strength is something I have long admired and respected. Few things remain as constant as my continued inspiration from those whose honesty, integrity, courage, and curiosity lead them to explore and venture beyond preconceived boundaries,” wrote Marc Jacobs.
In the image Marc Jacobs shared on his Instagram, Frances Bean Cobain is channeling her effortless grunge style. She is wearing the sheer embellished mini dress with lace details on her chest. The perfect combination of an edgy, but sweet look.
He wrote a similar caption for Courtney Cobain last year on Instagram: “COURTNEY, R(evolution): With my abundance of respect for Courtney Love’s musical contributions to grunge/rock culture and her status as this sort of, Grunge Goddess, it was her mesmerizing and extraordinarily moving portrayal of Althea in the film, The People vs Larry Flynt that simultaneously broke my heart and won my love. While I hadn’t yet met Courtney during my time as Creative Director at Perry Ellis, it was her then style that had a great influence on that now infamous “grunge collection” show in 1992. Courtney and I (and a then 2 or 3-year-old Frances Bean) first met at dinner with Anna Sui in 1994 at Bar Six in NYC. I remember being quite taken by her deep, thorough knowledge of and voracious appetite for fashion and music. There has always been a genuine allure about Courtney that I continue to admire,” wrote Jacobs under a photo of Courtney Cobain, photographed by David Sims.
The campaign with Frances Bean Cobain is a much better presentation of Marc Jacobs Spring 2017 collection than the New York Fashion Week runway show. Marc Jacob’s show was criticized over social media for cultural misappropriation, after all the white models wore dreadlocks. The Marc Jacobs’ models included Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. Marc Jacobs apologized on Instagram for the “unintentional” offense towards black people.
Despite the fact that Frances Bean Cobain is a celebrity child, Marc Jacobs chose her because she does not look like a model, but rather like an average, normal girl.
“I’m representing what a general, standard, average human girl would look like wearing these clothes. I think that’s why Marc picked me for this,” said Frances Bean Cobain in an interview for Vogue US.
Although she appeared in Marc Jacobs’ ad campaign for the Spring 2017 collection, don’t expect Frances Bean Cobain to be just another celebrity child who became a model. “I don’t think I’ll be modeling for anybody else for a very long time—this is 100 percent outside my comfort zone. I wouldn’t have done it with anyone other than Marc,” said Frances Bean Cobain.
However, Frances has modeled before. Back in 2008, she appeared in Harper’s Bazaar. But, Marc Jacobs campaign is her first major gig in the fashion world. 24-year-old Frances is an artist, and she is selling her work online.
