Micro-transactions have a bad stigma about them in gaming culture and the stigma is rightfully earned, though at times, ire can be misplaced where developers attempt to keep its game altering effects to a minimum. Injustice 2 will have a micro-transaction system with currency called Source Crystals.
NetherRealm Studios has confirmed that the system will be strictly for cosmetic purposes and not any game changing features. “We value our community and want to be clear: you cannot ‘pay to win’ with Injustice 2. Source Crystals can only be used to purchase cosmetic adjustments to your fighters, Premiere character Skins with no gameplay advantage, and various shaders for character costumes.”
NetherRealm also detailed its Transform Gear system that utilizes Source Crystals. “Transform Gear allows you to apply the visuals of one piece of Gear to another piece. For example, if you have a piece of Gear with your perfect stat loadout but it doesn’t have your perfect look, you can apply the visuals from one of your other pieces of Gear to it. After using Transform Gear, your Gear piece will have your preferred stats matched with your preferred visuals.”
All of the characters in the game have four base stats — including strength, defense, health, and ability. Every character also has five pieces of gear including head, torso, legs, arms, and a character specific item. While playing the game, players will earn thousands of pieces of gear that give various stat bonuses. The bonuses range from small to large with some simply boosting stats to some that raise one stat but lowers another.
Characters currently confirmed are Firestorm, Doctor Fate, Swamp Thing, Cyborg, Batman, Blue Beetle, The Flash, Harley Quinn, Superman, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Deadshot, Gorilla Grodd, Aquaman, Robin, Cheetah, Brainiac, Bane, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Black Canary, and Atrocitus.
Injustice 2 is scheduled for release on May 16, 2016. The story follows the events of the first game as Batman and his allies attempt to piece the world back together after the High Councilor, a manipulated Superman, brought destruction to the world. As Batman attempts to rebuild, a new threat is on the horizon threating the Earth once again.
