Intel Matrix RAID is a computer technology which was introduced by Intel. It is neither hardware nor software. Rather, it is a firmware, RAID system. In the beginning, it appeared in the ICH6R “Southbridge” chip. The letter R at the end of the name of Southbridge “ICH6R” indicates that the Southbridge has Matrix RAID technology and no other upgrades. On the other hand, if the Southbridge has “DO” or “DH” at the end, it combined RAID with non-RAID upgrades. Some newer chipsets use Intel RST (Intel PCH C200) without extension “R” within the chipset. Moreover, Intel Matrix RAID uses two or more hard disks that are treated as a single disk by the operating system. Its aim is to increase redundancy that avoids data loss.
In addition, Intel suggests putting any data and important applications on a RAID volume to protect it against data loss. Intel Rapid Storage Technology is a combination of Intel Matrix RAID and Intel Smart Response Technology.
