Intel Matrix RAID Technology: All The Details

intel matrix raid

Intel Matrix RAID is a computer technology which was introduced by Intel. It is neither hardware nor software. Rather, it is a firmware, RAID system. In the beginning, it appeared in the ICH6R “Southbridge” chip. The letter R at the end of the name of Southbridge “ICH6R” indicates that the Southbridge has Matrix RAID technology and no other upgrades. On the other hand, if the Southbridge has “DO” or “DH” at the end, it combined RAID with non-RAID upgrades. Some newer chipsets use Intel RST (Intel PCH C200) without extension “R” within the chipset. Moreover, Intel Matrix RAID uses two or more hard disks that are treated as a single disk by the operating system. Its aim is to increase redundancy that avoids data loss.

In addition, Intel suggests putting any data and important applications on a RAID volume to protect it against data loss. Intel Rapid Storage Technology is a combination of Intel Matrix RAID and Intel Smart Response Technology.

In fact, we store important information on PCs in both our business and personal lives. That information may range from vacation photos and wedding to tax returns and business files. We often forget to back up our data in advance to prevent loss. In case of Hard Disk failure, all the important information is lost. Therefore, Intel Matrix RAID technology helps us to prevent our data loss. Some other benefits are fault tolerance, ease of use, performance and newer usage models.

Performance can be improved by allowing the controller to use the capabilities of joined hard disks with RAID. Furthermore, Intel Matrix RAID technology provides us some features that allow easy use of Intel solution. We can upgrade from a single drive to RAID technology by adding a second drive later on. We do not need to reinstall the operating system. The second drive is plugged into the SATA controller.

Fault tolerance is an ability of the system to tolerate the faults of the Hard Drive. Fault tolerance can be augmented by redundancy. There is lower chance for the subsystem to fail due to hardware failures. Besides, the Power saving’s solution spin up hard disks to reduce stress on small power supplies. It is called the SSU capability. Moreover, Matrix RAID has different RAID levels such as RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 5.

We can set up a system with Matrix RAID by following these steps:

  • Enabling RAID in the system BIOS
  • Creating a RAID volume
  • Installing the Operating System on the RAID volume by using F6 installation method
  • Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver
  • Creating the second RAID volume

Nowadays, the large multinational enterprises store the records of their employees, financial transactions and other important documents on computers. These companies demand the hardware that secures their data efficiently. Under such circumstances, Intel Matrix RAID technology meets their needs and provides them with a backup of their important data.

Intel Matrix RAID technology has been extended for desktops and mobile platforms since 2008. Besides, users seek the latest news of a new version of this technology. The new version includes many new features to make it more reliable. Hopefully, Intel Matrix RAID play vital role in data protection, not only for business community but also for home users.
