He was born on April 19, 1941, in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, in the state of Espírito Santo.
He is the son of a modest watchmaker and a seamstress.
He is a fervent Catholic. Roberto Carlos was marked by a railway accident in his childhood in which he lost his right leg. When he was six years old, at a patron saint’s party, he was hit by a steam locomotive. They had to amputate the right leg below the knee — since then he uses a prosthesis.
He worked as a civil servant at the Ministry of Finance, before he triumphed as a singer. In 1957, formed the group Os Sputniks with Tim Maia and Erasmo Carlos and participated in the program Club of the Rock.
It was discovered in 1958 by composer and journalist Carlos Imperial. His first solo recording was in 1959 for Polydor, “Fora do Tom” and “João and Maria”. The disc was a failure. He signed with Columbia. In 1961 he recorded his first LP, Crazy For You. A year later he released “Malena“, and “End of Love“.
His unmistakable voice transcended national borders and he is the Brazilian artist who has sold the most albums in the world, with more than 120 million copies. In 1963 “Splish Splash” came out and in 1964 gained great fame, it was also the title of an LP recorded in 1965.
He was with Maria Lucila Torres for 25 years, with whom he had his first son, Rafael. In 1991, a lawsuit forced him to give him his surname, Braga. Soon after, Maria died of cancer. He married Cleonice Rossi Martinelli in 1968.
After 12 years of marriage, they separated. He was married to the actress Miriam Ríos from 1980 to 1989. In 1996, he married Maria Rita Simöes, a teacher who died of cancer in 1999. He reappeared in November 2000 at the Geraldão Stadium in Recife , With the show “Amor Sem Fim”, dedicated to the memory of his wife. In 2010, he received the Sony Music Award in New York for 100 million albums sold.
